Description
Fine black wool serge with black woven lining; decorated with white silk braid on shawl collar, front, around bottom of jacket, cuffs, shoulders and with a large heart shaped embelishment across back. Darts at lower edge give fitted appearance.
History
This is part of a charro costume (along with pants and sombrero). A charro is a horseman who practices the sport of the Charreria (much like a rodeo). The costume is a distinctive symbol of Mexican culture and is worn with pride.
The donor, Francisca Ramirez of Holland, MI, wore this costume at Latino celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo in Texas and Holland, MI.
