Description
Metal necklace strung on a fine wire with a fine safety chain and small round flat silver beads (6 to an inch) double-stranded for two-thirds of the necklace; on the double section, small animals 2"-3" long are spaced; each animal is on a heavy silver base and is portrayed with iridescent shell outlined with metal, enamel, or black tortoise shell (now outlawed) inserts forming very recognizable animals (11 in all)--squirrels, rabbits, an armadillo, a wolf, a raccoon, a beaver, a skunk, etc.; animals are decorated with peach, turquoise or red accents; largest pendant piece represents a wolf; on the reverse side of the work is " P. Sheyka" (name of the artist, Pofilio Sheyka of Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico); also, on back of wolf are numbers "4950" in black marker; contained in a white box with lid labeled "Wheelwright Museum, Case Trading Post, Santa Fe, New Mexico".
History
Purchased by Dr. Titus Van Haitsma and his wife sometime around 1966-1971. They were made by members of the Zuni tribe in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
