Description
Gold locket with initials "MSV" (Marjorie S. Vyn); opens to photos of a lady and gentleman--donor's parents John and Marjorie (S. Vyn) Schouten; 20" chain.
History
John Schouten (1881-1978) and Marjorie Vyn Schouten were married in Kent County, MI between 1907 and 1910. They lived in Holland, MI at 57 East 9th Street. Both are buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
Their daughter, Elizabeth (the donor), is buried beside her parents.

John attended Holland High School and Hope Preparatory School. He was a catcher on their baseball teams at that time. He played on the semi-professional teams in Holland and Zeeland. At age 27, in 1908, he became the first coach of baseball at Hope College. In 1919, he became the first Physical Education director at Hope. John started the physical education program for men and women. John was the entire athletic and physical education program at Hope, being the first and only coach of all sports teams at the time and Hope College’s first athletic trainer. John also helped other area high school sports programs as a trainer. In 1926 John's work was responsible for Hope's acceptance into the MIAA. In 1948 Hope awarded John with a degree of Bachelor of Arts. Schouten retired in 1952 with 33 years of service to Hope College. In 1965 he was honored by having the Carnegie Gymnasium Center renovated in his name. Since 1983 the John Schouten Award has been presented annually to the outstanding female athlete in the senior class.

Elizabeth was born to John (1881-1978) and Marjorie (1882-1958) Schouten. Her nickname was “Bess”. Bess was born November 6, 1909 in Holland. She was a graduate of Hope College and Michigan State University, Elizabeth taught school in Michigan for Constantine, Grand Haven and Holland school systems. She taught at Lincoln and Jefferson school for Holland.
