Description
Round, brown-flecked, polished bowl (a) with lid (b).  The outside of bowl is with carved scenes depicting an elephant, boat and trees.  The lid is etched with a pattern and flower-design handle (chip missing).

This bowl and lid come from India.
History
The donor, Lois M. Marsilje, was a missionary nurse, she collected this object in India where she labored for nearly 40 years, ca. 1937-1974.

Lois M. Marsilje, was born in Athens, IL in 1911. Her family moved to Holland, MI in the 1920s. Lois attended Holland High and Hope College. She was also a member of Holland’s First Reformed Church.
Lois studied at Chicago’s Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. She became a missionary nurse in India, where she worked nearly 40 years. retiring in 1974, Lois returned to live in Holland, MI. Lois died in 2001. She was buried in Holland’s Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
