Description
Olive-drab, wool overcoat with a 3.5" wide collar; at front of collar is a hook clasp and flap which can be unbuttoned and then buttoned on other side to close collar with two smaller buttons, .625" in diameter; double-breasted front with four 1.125" diameter buttons and buttonholes on each side, 5" apart (on right side of wearer, top button and 3rd one down are missing); buttons are dark brown, almost black having dull finish with American Eagle design; deep vertical-cut pocket on each side; belt in back with two 1.125" diameter buttons; inside top collar "U.S." is stamped in purple ink; size "42" stamped inside right sleeve lining; on back side of bottom of coat lining label says "Jos. N. Susskind & Co., Inc Contract April 22, 1918, No. 2218-P, Specification No. 1284 Philadelphia Depot, Q.M.C (Quartermaster Corps)";below that is purple stamp in block letters "Phila. Depot" and below that, in purple, "D. Civitena" (possibly inspector); good condition except for a few moth holes.

John was born in Graafschap, MI on 8-15-1892 to Jan and Fanny Piers. John grew up in the Fillmore and laketown areas of Allegan County. He married Tilda Bomers in Holland, MI in 1920. They moved to Grand Rapids soon after marriage, and settled in Jenison, MI.
