Inside the front book jacket it states, "This autobiographical account by a retired foreign service officer combines diplomatic history, a cultural travelogue, a diary and a love story. The "little kingdom" is Laos, and the story illuminated the tragic history of that country during the 1960s and 1970s when the three ruling princes struggled for control. The author, who started his career as a Fulbright teacher in Vientiane, Laos, became a State Department foreign service officer, and cultural attache'. He came to know Prince Souvanna Phouma and fell involve with the Prince's daughter. Moune, whose he married. The narrative ends with the Communist Pathet Lao taking over Laos, Souvanna fatally stricken with heart disease, and Stieglitz saying farewell to his dying father-in-law in the communist capital of Vientiane. A compelling personal story, this book also adds fascinating insight into the struggle for th control of Laos.
