The tool chest and tools from 2003.103 belonged to Andries DuMez.Andries was born in the Netherlands in 1831. In 1852 he came to America and settled in Fillmore Township, Allegan Co., MI. He became a carpenter and joiner (1870 and 1880 US census).
In 1856 he married Berendine Schurman in the Overisel Reformed Church, Rev. Albertus Van Raalte officiated.
The Du Mez family lived in Fillmore Twp (1860 and 1870 US census) and Laketown Township (1880 US census).
The children of Andries and Berendine included the following: Aleida (1858-1933); Lavina (1861-1934); John (1863-1928); Gerrit; and Ben (1874-1953). The three boys were the founders of the Du Mez Bros. department store in Holland, MI.
Andries passed away in 1885. Andries' great-grandsons, Theodore and John Du Mez, donated his collection of woodworking tools in 2003.
