Carving of an alligator, wooden, painted black with shells for eyes.
History
This alligator carving was collected by Park Township, MI resident David Ver Lee while working in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. From 1966 to 1972, David, an eye surgeon, participated in a Harvard medical study of natives from this region, studying diseases common to the people of this region. This piece, along with others in accession 2004.58, are representative of the artwork in the New Guinea and Solomon Islands area.
