Description
American Legion 5th District Officer’s uniform jacket, navy blue, wool jacket lined in dark blue. Yellow braid at cuff. Four buttons. Two patches adorn the lapels. Each patch contains a blue and gold, sun-shaped design and the words “American Legion”. Label on inside of jacket has the words “R.J. Rutgers, Holland, Mich.”. A label inside a pocket reads “Fine Tailoring, Ray N. Smith, Jul. 22, 1940”.
History
American Legion 5th District Officer’s uniform worn by Ray N. Smith (1900-1981). Ray was a veteran of WWI. During the 1940s, he wore this uniform.
For 52 years, Ray owned and operated the Ray Smith Oil Company, with service stations in Holland, Saugatuck, Newaygo, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids.
Ray lived in Holland with his wife Theresa.
