Description
Black and white photograph showing soldies lined up along 8th Street, at River Avenue.  These soldiers are members of the local chapter of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic).  The man in front, to the right of the soldier holding the flag, is believed to be Jacob Heeringa.  Engbertus Vander Veen's hardware store is visible directly behind the soldiers.
History
Jacob Heeringa was born on 6-11-1840 in the Netherlands. He came to the US ca. 1862, immediately entering the Civil War.
Jacob married Ida Ellen (1842-1915). They lived in Allegan County, MI (1880 and 1900 US Census). Jacob died on 2-17-1925. He was buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery beside Ida.
