Postcard with colored photograph of unidentified men, in a long line, walking up a hill. Most of the men are well dressed and carrying a satchel.At the top of the postcard, in black lettering, are the words "U.S. National Army Cantonment, Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Mich.". Along the bottom, in black letters, are the words "Drafted Men marching Up Big Hill To Camp".
The back of the postcard is stamped "Battle Creek, Custer, June 14, 1918". The postcard was sent by James M. Cook (1896-1963) to Kathryn Ter Beek of 300 East 8th St., Holland, MI.
History
James "Jim" M. Cook was born 2-29-1896. He served in the Army, Company L, 7th Infantry, 3rd Division during World War One.Jim married Kathryn Ter Beek on 5-27-1920 in Zeeland, MI. (Their daughter is the donor). For more than 20 years, the couple lived at 203 West 8th Street in Holland, MI.
Jim worked for the West Michigan Furniture Company and the Charles R. Sligh Company.
