Description
Tan certificate with black lettering. At the top, in black, is the image of a Dutch girl standing among tulips. Above that is the name Holland Chamber of Commerce. Below this is the following statement…"In recognition of his immeasurable contribution to the cultural and recreational life of the community through his genius in city park and landscape beautification and in his material development of the tulip plantings which have brought so much fame to his beloved community. Dick Smallenburg the Community Service Award....".  March 1959.
History
This certificate was awarded to Dick Smallenburg (1893-1960) upon his retirement from the position of park superintendent for Holland, MI. Dick was born in the Netherlands in 1893 and came to Holland, MI in 1921. He worked for awhile as the private gardener of Walter Lane before beginning with the city in 1928. On July 23, 1922, Dick married Bouwina Veenstra in Holland, MI. They are buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
