History
Rena Boven grew up on a farm in Graafschap, Michigan. She studied nursing at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Rena was one of three registered nurses who staffed Holland's first hospital when it opened in January, 1919. Miss Boven was Director of Nursing from 1946 until 1954 when she was honored with the title of Director of Nursing Emeritus. Her death in 1957 followed her retirement by only a few months. Her name lives on today as the name of the first Holland Hospital guild which was organized in 1952. Rena died January 19, 1957 at the age of 60.
