There he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Van Hoven in 1941. In 1942 he was sent to New Guinea where he was one of the Ghost Mountain Boys in the Battle for Buna receiving the Bronze Star for combat. He remained in Australia until being shipped out in 1945. He then attended Chicago Technical College receiving a degree in Building Construction and Architectural Design. He also helped organize Wildlife Unlimited of Allegan and Ottawa Counties. Gordon's wife, Virginia, passed away in 1998, after 56 years of marriage. In 1999 he met Mary Jane Smit. They married in 2000 and spent their time together living in Holland during the summer and Arizona in the winter. Gordon and Mary are members of Fellowship Reformed Church.
