Du Mez Brothers department Store, located at 31-33 East 8th Street, is visible in the background. People's State Bank, located at 29 East 8th, is visible to the left of Du Mez Brothers.On the left side of the photograph Uncle Sam and Martha Washington can be seen marching. behind them, on the right side of the photo, is a band dressed as Continental soldiers.
History
Martha Washington was played by Holland resident Hazel. Van Landegend. Uncle Sam was played by Frank Lievense.Hazel was born in Holland, MI on 3-16-1893 to Tyler Van Landegend and Ada Belleini. Hazel's younger sister was Lois Van Landegend Sinke.
In 1915, Hazel married Seth Strelinger. Hazel passed away in 1916.
