Dr. Tena Holkeboer was born in Holland, MI on 1-27-1895 to David Holkeboer (1868–1918) and Anna Van der Ark (1871–1952).She was a graduate of Holland Christian Schools and Hope College. In 1949, she was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Hope College, with Sen. Everett Dirksen of Illinois, Senate minority leader.
Dr. Holkeboer spent 40 years as a missionary beginning in 1920 in Amoy, China where she was principal of Hope Christian High School 30 years until the Communist takeover. She then spent 10 years in Manilla, the Philippines where she established a second Hope Christian High School of which she was principal until her retirement in 1960.
Dr. Holkeboer passed away in Holland, MI on 11-4-1965.
