Description
A photograph of the Life Saving Station, a forerunner of the Coast Guard. It is thought to be the first life saving station. It opened during the summer of 1886 on the south side of the channel from Lake Macatawa to Lake Michigan. Eight men, including Captain Charles Morton and two local men, made up the first crew. 
History
Randall P. "Randy" Vande Water was a local historian and newspaper editor. He spent 4 decades at the Holland Sentinel working as sports editor, city editor, editorial page editor, and managing editor.
