Description
This image and information is part of the commencement program for Holland High School class of 1973. This portion is a copy of a photograph of the first Holland High School graduating class of 1873. It shows 5 females, Alida Binnekant, Nellie Walker, Johanna Koning, Kate Ledeboer, Kate Garrod.  
History
Alida Binnekant was born in Holland, MI on 9-7-1852 (from baptismal records) to Jan Binnekant and Geertje Binnekant. Alida married Stephen Harmeling in Holland, MI on 4-12-1876. She passed away on 6-11-1926 in Vashon, WA. Her father operated J. Binnekant & Co. printers in Holland.

The donor, Margaret Van Vyven, taught in the Holland Public Schools from 1931-1940 in grades kindergarten through fourth. She worked as music supervisor from 1941-1955 and as elementary coordinator from 1955 until her retirement in 1973.
She was honored as parade marshal for two different Tulip Times, in 1979 and in 2000. Margaret and Gertrude were the daughters of John Van Vyven who was the original directory of the Holland American Legion Band. there mother was Anna.
