Description
On May 2, 1955 Holland Public Schools held a ceremony and reception to rename the Holland Junior High School to the E.E. Fell Junior High School.  Dr. Fell, who was 80 years old at the time, had been the district’s superintendent for 35 years retiring in 1945.  In 1955 he held the title Superintendent Emeritus.  Hope College gave him an honorary doctorate in 1935.
The ceremony included the unveiling of a portrait and plaque of Dr. Fell that would hang in the school’s entry way.  Since the last payment had been made on bonds issued in 1923-1924 to build that building, there was a “burning of simulated bonds.”  Board members from 1923-1924 were present:  Fred T. Miles, Henry Geerlings, Henry Winter, and Gerrit Vander Hill.  Songs were performed by Marjorie Brouwer Lumsden, the granddaughter of the late board member, James Brouwer (Vice president 1923-1924.) The Junior High Orchestra provided music.  A coffee hour followed the ceremony.
