History
Private Dirk Keppel was born somewhere around 1843. He is recorded as living in Holland, MI with his parents and siblings in the 1850 Federal Census. His parents were Huibert and Derkg Keppel, and one of his siblings was his brother Teunis Keppel, who served and survived the Civil War. He enlisted in the 8th Michigan Infantry, Company D, on September 11 1861. He was killed in action on Wilmington Island, Georgia on April 16, 1862. Official records have him recorded as "Dirk Kipple."
