Civil War letter by Gerrit Van Bree. Handwritten in Dutch. Four pages. Dated December 13, 1862. Titled "Washington kemp", meaning that Van Bree was in Washington D.C. See T89-1011.38 for an English translation.
History
Gerrit Van Bree was a Holland native who served in the 5th Michigan Cavalry Regiment. He was born sometime in 1841 in the Netherlands, emigrating to the United States with his family in December 1856. He enlisted in the Union Army on August 30, 1862. He was captured by Confederate forces at Trevillian Station, Virginia on June 11, 1864. He died in January 1865 according to a letter by one of his brothers.
