A column written by Randy Vande Water for the Holland Sentinel on February 17, 2013. He tells the story of John Douma from Graafschap who volunteered for the Civil War to take a married man's place. He did not see combat, but he was part of the guard for Lincoln's bier in Springfield, IL.
