History
Jan (John) Nies was born on February 29th, 1836 in the Netherlands. He came to America about 1852, settling in East Holland, MI. On September 18th, 1861, he enlisted with the 2nd Michigan Cavalry Co. D. He served until October 22nd, 1864. After the war, he moved to Saugatuck, MI with his family and lived there until 1893. He returned to Holland MI, and opened a hardware store that he ran until his retirement in 1910. He passed on May 22nd, 1920 in Holland, MI and is interred in Riverside Cemetery in Saugatuck, MI.

The Second Michigan Cavalry was a cavalry regiment organized on in 1861. The 2nd Cavalry was commanded by the famous Phil Sheridan for some time. The regiment. The regiment was heavily involved in skirmishes, and operated outside of the primary army often. Notable places the regiment fought at were Corinth, MS (1862), Perryville, KY, Blountsville, TN, Chickamauga, GA, Nashville, Tn (1864), and Corinth MS again in 1865.
