George W. Smith was born in 1835. On September 6th, 1861, he enlisted in the 2nd Michigan Cavalry Co. D. He was killed in action on June 4th, 1863 in Franklin, TN. His name can be found on the Soldier's Monument in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.The Second Michigan Cavalry was a cavalry regiment organized in September 1861. The 2nd Cavalry was commanded by the famous Phil Sheridan for some time. The regiment. The regiment was heavily involved in skirmishes, and operated outside of the primary army often.
