History
John Van Anrooy (also spelled Anroy) was born on November 30th, 1836 in the Netherlands. He came to America with his parents in 1847 to Holland, MI. On September 11th, 1861 he enlisted in the 2nd Michigan Cavalry Co. D, in which he served until October 23rd, 1864. After the war, he was a carpenter by trade and built a small house on west 12th street. He also worked as the foreman and bridge carpenter for the Chicago and West Michigan Railway for 7 years. He passed on March 15th, 1907 in Holland, MI and is interred in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.

The Second Michigan Cavalry was a cavalry regiment organized in September 1861. The 2nd Cavalry was commanded by the famous Phil Sheridan for some time. The regiment. The regiment was heavily involved in skirmishes, and operated outside of the primary army often. Notable places the regiment fought at were Corinth, MS (1862), Perryville, KY, Blountsville, TN, Chickamauga, GA, Nashville, Tn (1864), and Corinth MS again in 1865.
