History
James F. Vander Sluis was born in March 1841 in the Netherlands. On August 6th, 1862, he enlisted in the 21st Michigan Infantry, in which he served until June 8th, 1865. He moved to Grand Rapids, MI some time after the war. He passed on August 31st, 1915 and is interred in Oakhill Cemetery in Grand Rapids, MI.

The 21st Michigan Infantry was mustered into service on September 4th, 1862. The 21st fought gallantly in its first engagement at the battle of Perryville. The regiment also fought heavily under General Rosecrans in the Nashville area, suffering losses in the fighting near Stone River. During June and July 1863, the regiment occupied Bridgeport Alabama, and after was involved in the battle of Chickamauga. Afterwards, the regiment joined the engineers corp. building bridges and other infrastructure in the Chattanooga area, and was involved in Sherman's March to the Sea and Bentonville N.C. The regiment was mustered out on June 22nd, 1865.
