Service record of Holland resident Ralph Steffens in "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War, Vol. 3"
History
Ralph Steffens was born on June 28th, 1837 in the Netherlands. Before the Civil War, he and his family emigrated to the United States. By the time of the Civil War, he was living in Grand Rapids, MI. On April 10th, 1861, he enlisted in the 3rd Michigan Infantry Co. F. He was transferred to the 5th Michigan Infantry Co. F on June 10th, 1864. On June 16th, 1864, he suffered a gunshot wound in the right lung at the battle of Petersburg. He served until July 5th, 1865. In 1896, he moved to Holland, MI. He passed on February 4th, 1904, and is interred in the Zeeland Cemetery in Zeeland, MI.
