History
Part of the Harrington Collection.
Austin Harrington was born in Overisel, MI on 8-11-1863 to George S. Harrington (1836-1921) and Martha Partlow (1839-1922).
Austin married Lucia Garvelink (1862-1951) in Holland, MI in 1887. They had two children: Harry (1890-1957) and Carl (1904-1991).
Austin was a licensed lake captain and contractor who served as the Holland harbormaster for over fifty years. In 1888, Austin opened a wood and coal yard on the corner of Eighth Street and First (Washington) Avenue, with loading dock on Black Lake. Known as Harrington Coal, business was so good that by 1917 it had tripled.
In the late 1920s Austin’s sons Harry and Carl joined the company, which by then ran the largest coal yard in town. Harrington Coal never turned a needy customer away empty handed and even supplied competitors when supplies ran short. Austin Harrington died on 8-2-1939 in Holland, MI. He is buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
Harry Harrington married Clara A. Phillips (1885-1949) on 8-24-1910 in Bangor, Ottawa Co., MI. They lived in Holland at 237 Van Raalte Ave. Harry and Clara had one child, Phillip Harrington (1920-2009). Phillip was a photographer for Look magazine. Harry worked for the Harrington Coal Company and, later, served as Holland, MI mayor from 1949-1955. He passed away on August 9, 1957 in Holland, MI. Clara died August 20, 1949. Both are buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
Carl Harrington married Ora Pearl Andrews (1907-1992) on 7-11-1929 in Painesdale, Michigan. They lived on South Shore Drive. Carl and Ora had two daughters, Carol and Garnet. Carl worked for Harrington Coal Company and also served as an Ottawa County Road Commissioner. He passed away on September 28, 1991, Ora died in 1992. They are both buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland. Read More
