History
The use of the letter "u" in the name "Waukazoo" is not the way Chief Joseph Wakazoo and family spelled their name. The "u" was added later by Holland residents in their writings about the Wakazoo family. Any reference to Waukazoo Woods or the Waukazoo Inn use the spelling with the letter "u".

Chief Joseph Wakazoo was the leader of the Black River Band of Ottawa Indians. He passed away ca. 1845. He was succeeded by his brother, Chief Peter Wakazoo (1809-1861).
In 1849, along with the Rev. George N. Smith (1807-1881) and George’s wife Arvilla (1808-1895), Chief Peter led the Black River Band to Leelanau County, MI.
