This object was donated by Mr. Gerrit (Jan) John Rutgers. He was born on May 12th, 1870 in Holland, Michigan. He was an active part of the community. His occupation was in farming all the way up until his death. He passed away on July 20th, 1942. He is currently buried in Graafschap Cemetery in Michigan.
His father, Gerrit Rutgers (1828-1920), was one of the party of 72 people that arrived in the Holland colony in 1847. The colonists purchased land from the government in the area of Graafschap and settled there.
This object was listed as being 150 years old at the time of accession in 1937.
