Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte was born on October 17, 1811 in Overijssel, Netherlands. He came to the United States in 1847 and settled in Michigan, founding the Dutch settlement that would come to be known as Holland.

On March 11, 1836, he married Christina Johanna de Moen in the Netherlands.

Albertus passed away on November 7, 1876 in Holland, MI. He was buried on Holland's Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
