Originally purchased by a committee of citizens in Ottawa County to present as a gift to Hon. G.J. Diekema before going to Congress.Gerrit Jan Diekema (1859-1930), son of Wiepke Diekema (1830-1900) and Hendrikjen Stegeman (1826-1903), was the donor’s father.
Gerrit was born in Holland, MI on 3-27-1859. He practiced law in Holland, MI, served as US Minister to the Netherlands under Herbert Hoover, and was a member of the 60th and 61st Congress.
He is buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
