Donated by Susan (Boven) Borchert who lived at 60 West 7th St, Holland, Michigan. She was the daughter of Thomas Pieter Boven and Clara de Frel. Susan is buried in the Pilgrim Home Cemetery.Her father, Thomas Boven, was born in a log house on the hill at Graafschap in 1849, two years after Dr. Van Raalte arrived. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pieter Boven, were the first couple married in the old log church where the Pilgrim Home Cemetery is now located. The marriage was performed by Dr. Van Raalte, the founder of Holland. Thomas Boven was the first child to be baptized by Dr. Van Raalte in the pioneer church.
Mr. Boven was a carpenter, conducted a general store in Graafschap, was a civil war veteran and distinctly remembered the great Holland fire of 1871. His accounts of the fire are in the Holland City News: Holland City News, Volume 64, Number 26: June 20, 1935.;Read More
