History
Captain Jan Pauels (1819-1914), also known as John, was born in the Netherlands and came to the US ca. 1848. He was married to Maaike "Margaret" Schaap (1825-1864) by AC Van Raalte on 7-16-1849. The couple lived in Zeeland, MI. They had at least 6 children: Arie (1850-1875); Otto (1853-1928); Lijsje (1855-1856); Anthony (1858-1859); Anthony J. (1860-1944); and Maaike Elizabeth (1864-1923). Jan spent many years aboard ships on the Great Lakes and the 7 seas, bringing home many prized possessions (many of which are included in 1941.55). Jan and Maaike are buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. In 1866, 2 years after the death of Maaike, Jan married Johanna Grevenstuk (1824-1912). Jan also worked at Pluggers Mill.
