Daniel Ten Cate was born in Holland, MI on September 28, 1877 to John Ten Cate, and Hendrika Diekema Ten Cate. He was a graduate of Hope College and the University of Michigan law school.After graduation from law school, he became associated with his uncles, Gerrit J. Diekema and George E. Kollen, in the practice of law ultimately forming a partnership under the name of Diekema, Kollen, and Ten Cate. Daniel's son Vernon D. eventually joined the firm.
His wife, Veronica K. Kleaver, died in 1927. Daniel died in 1956.
He was a member of Hope Church, the Century Club and the Knights of Pythias.
