Copy of a letter sent to Rev. G. Goris from G.J. Kollen. The letter is dated July 11, 1889. There is English translation of the letter.
History
Gerrit Jan (John) Kollen was born on August 9, 1843, in Nyverdal, The Netherlands. His father died in 1846. In July of 1851 Gerrit, his mother and 4 other children began their 42-day journey to the United States. The family settled in Overisel, Michigan. In 1868 Gerrit graduated from Hope College as one of five graduates. He began teaching. In 1878 he was named a professor at Hope College. He taught mathematics, natural philosophy and astronomy. On December 27, 1879, he married Mary Van Raalte, daughter of A.C. and Christina Van Raalte. In 1893 Gerrit is elected as the third president of Hope College. In 1911 Gerrit is named President Emeritus after he resigns as Hope College’s president. Gerrit died on September 5, 1915. In 1956 Kollen Hall is dedicate;
