Brown, toy sword made of oak and leather.  The tip of the sword was damaged in the 1940s (according to donor).
On the leather handle, the name "Freddie S. Bertsch" is inscribed beside the year "1893".

Daniel Bertsch was born in Ohio on 3-25-1842. He married Anna Sakkers in Holland, MI on 6-21-1867. Anna was born in the Netherlands in 1844.
The 1880 US Census shows them living in Holland, MI with their children: William Harry (1869-1921); Charles Sakkers (1871-1920); and Fred Stanley (1879-1953). Daniel worked as a dry goods dealer at the time.
The US Census from 1900, 1910 and 1920 show Daniel living in the Holland, MI area, employed as a farmer. He passed away in Holland, MI on 3-19-1923. Anna passed away in 1895 in California.

Fred Stanley Bertsch was born on 10-17-1879 in Holland, MI. He married Martha E. Beck in Chicago on 6-30-1915. They had two children: Charles and Fred, Jr (the donor). The 1920 US Census shows Fred and Martha living in Chicago. The 1930 and 1940 US Census place them in Park Township, Ottawa Co., MI.
Fred, Sr. passed away in Holland, MI on 6-27-1953. Martha passed away in Holland, MI on 12-24-1984.
